How to Create a Professional Development Plan

❓STEP 1: WHAT ARE MY CAREER ASPIRATIONS?

Reflect on where you want to be in the short & long term. This could involve advancing in your current field, transitioning to a new industry, or developing specific skills. Clarity in your goals sets the foundation for your PDP.

❓STEP 2: WHAT IS MY SWOT?

An introspective look at your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, & Threats can provide a realistic view of your professional landscape & highlight areas for growth.

❓STEP 3: WHAT ARE MY KEY PERFORMANCE METRICS?

Key performance objectives should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant & Time-bound (SMART). They might include achieving certain sales targets, completing specific projects, or improving certain skill sets.

❓STEP 4: WHAT ARE MY KEY PROJECTS?

Identify key projects that align with your career goals & performance objectives. These projects should challenge you, contribute to your own success as well your organization’s success, & ideally raise your visibility.

❓STEP 5: HOW WILL I NURTURE KEY RELATIONSHIPS?

Identify & nurture relationships with mentors, supervisors, direct reports, & key stakeholders. These relationships provide support, guidance, feedback, & can open doors to new opportunities.

❓STEP 6: WHAT DO I NEED TO LEARN?

List the training programs, workshops, certifications, or educational courses that will equip you with important skills and/or knowledge. Prioritize them based on their relevance to your goals & the value they add to your career.

❓STEP 7: WHAT MENTORING OR COACHING DO I NEED?

Regular interaction with a coach and/or mentor can accelerate your growth.

❓STEP 8: HOW WILL I BUILD MY NETWORK?

Effective networking is about quality connections rather than quantity. Focus on building a network that is relevant to your career goals. Attend industry events, participate in professional groups, & engage in online platforms to establish & nurture these connections.

❓STEP 9: WHAT IS MY TIMELINE? WHAT MILESTONES WILL I SET?

A timeline with specific milestones turns your plan into actionable steps. Set deadlines for achieving your performance objectives, completing key projects, & undertaking training programs.
