Day 4 was the day our Route 1 road trip started to feel like the California road trip we had imagined.
We left Lompoc after breakfast and headed north toward Pismo Beach. The drive itself was beautiful, with the landscape gradually changing as we got closer to the coast.
Pismo Beach was our first stop, and it was an easy place to fall into the vacation mood. We watched surfers catching waves, walked around the beach, took in the ocean views, and let Keanah run around for a bit. There was something nice about simply standing there and watching the surfers do their thing.
Next came Morro Bay, one of the highlights of the day. Morro Rock dominates the coastline and gives the whole town a character of its own. We walked along the waterfront and took photos.
From Morro Bay, we stopped at Schooners in Cayucos for lunch. Lunch with an ocean view made the stop even better. Sitting there, watching the water while we ate, felt like exactly what a California road trip should be.
We walked around the pier, took in the beach, and kept moving. These smaller stops are part of what makes this drive so enjoyable. You can pull over, walk around for a while, and then simply continue down Highway 1.
The next stop was the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Vista Point.
This was one of those places that makes you forget you’re standing beside a highway.
The elephant seals were right there on the beach, completely unconcerned about the people watching them. We spotted a male and spent some time watching the seals from the viewing area. Keanah found the whole thing fascinating, and it was one of the most memorable wildlife stops of the trip so far.
We then continued toward Cambria and slowed things down at Moonstone Beach. The boardwalk, ocean, rocks, and afternoon light made it a perfect place to wander without having anywhere else to be. Spotted some dolphins too!
Ana, meanwhile, had found her own highlight of the day. Every time we passed a garden, nursery, or little roadside display filled with succulents, she was completely locked in. One plant quickly turned into five, then ten, with her stopping to admire the shapes, colors, and tiny details of each one. At this point, I’m pretty sure this road trip has quietly turned into a California succulent tour for Ana.
By the time we reached Cambria, the day had given us almost everything we wanted from this part of Highway 1. Surfers in Pismo, lunch overlooking the ocean, a quiet stop in Cayucos, elephant seals beside the ocean, and a relaxed walk along Moonstone Beach.
This was the stretch of Highway 1 we had been waiting for.
