Memorial Day Weekend – Salt in the Air, Joy in the Little Moments

Some days feel packed with activities. And then there are days that somehow become memories while you’re still living them.

Galveston gave us one of those days.

The morning started with the beach. There’s something about an early swim in the ocean that resets you completely. The water was cool, the breeze was perfect, and for a little while nothing else mattered except the sound of waves and watching Keanah enjoy every second of it. Beach mornings with family just hit differently. No rush. No schedules. Just happiness in its simplest form.

From there, we headed to the ferry, and almost immediately the trip turned magical. Dolphins.

Not one or two in the distance, but several of them appearing beside the ferry like they were putting on a show for everyone onboard. Every time one surfaced, you could hear people around us getting excited all over again. Keanah was completely locked in, pointing every few seconds with pure amazement.

And somehow, that still wasn’t enough dolphin excitement for one day.

Later, we went on a dolphin ride, and this time we saw even more. Watching them glide effortlessly through the water never gets old. It’s one of those moments that reminds you how incredible nature can be when you stop long enough to actually notice it.

What made the ride even more interesting was our tour guide sharing stories about the harbor pilots. I had honestly never thought much about them before, but learning how these highly skilled pilots are entrusted with guiding enormous ships safely into port was fascinating. Seeing the massive cruise liners and cargo ships afterward gave me a whole new appreciation for what they do. Those ships looked like floating cities, and the idea of navigating them through busy waters suddenly felt incredibly impressive.

Another thing that completely caught my attention was the cruise liners themselves. Seeing them up close was honestly mind-blowing. Pictures never really prepare you for the scale of them. They towered over everything around them, quietly waiting for their next journey, and there was something exciting about imagining all the adventures happening onboard.

By lunchtime, we were properly hungry, so we stopped at Fisherman’s Wharf. Seafood, waterfront views, tired-but-happy family energy — it all just fit the day perfectly. Sometimes food tastes better simply because of the memories surrounding it, and this felt like one of those meals.

Next stop was the aquarium, which ended up being another highlight, especially because of the seals. There’s no way to watch seals play around without smiling. They completely stole the show. Keanah loved every second of it, and honestly, so did we.

After that, we finally made our way back to the hotel to freshen up for round two of the day.

Because apparently we still had energy left for Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier.

The pier at night has its own kind of energy. Lights everywhere, music, rides, ocean air — it feels nostalgic even while you’re there. Keanah absolutely loved the Ferris wheel. Seeing the excitement on her face from the top made the entire ride worth it.

Then came the part where Ana and I made questionable life decisions and got on one of the scarier rides. The kind where you immediately wonder why you agreed to this halfway through. Equal parts terror and laughter.

We ended the night the right way though: with Keanah on the carousel, smiling like the day could keep going forever.

Dinner at The Spot was the perfect way to slow everything down again. Great food, ocean breeze, tired feet, happy hearts.

And because vacations should always include dessert, we wrapped things up with something sweet from Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant.

By the end of the night, we were completely exhausted.

But it was the good kind of exhausted.

The kind that comes from a full day of laughter, family, unexpected moments, and making memories you know you’ll talk about for years.
